About Tholu Bommalata
Tholu bommalata roughly translates to 'dance of the leather puppets', and is a centuries-old form of shadow puppet theatre from the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Tholu bommalata puppeteers mainly reenact stories from the Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, and usually perform through the night.
The translucent leather and bold colours of tholu bommalata puppets make them glow dramatically when placed in front of a light source. We have tried to recreate this magic with this collection of tea light holders.
Instructions for Care
- Wipe only using a clean soft cloth.
- For décor purposes only.
- If using electric bulbs, we recommend using ones with low wattage. The heat from very bright bulbs may damage or discolour the leather.
